9. Illinois

Illinois is another place with high state and local taxes. In the Prairie State, some taxes rise to about 10%. But the most important factor for retirees is health care. In Illinois, a healthy couple aged 65 will obtain health care costs of $416,500 which is $21,500 more than the national average. On the other hand, one upside of retiring in Illinois is that you won’t be expected to pay taxes on your retirement income, 401k plan or individual retirement plan.

Hopefully, none of these expensive states made your retiree list. While Hawaii and New York can seem like dream destinations, it’s important to live within your means and retire in a place that you can afford to.
