North Carolina’s mild winters are ideal for retirees who want to be comfortable in later life. But there are some downsides of the cheaper south too. The average income in this state’s households is 14% less than the U.S median. Similarly, the income of 65-year-olds and over is 18.3% lower.

Poverty is a big problem in North Carolina, and 10% of senior citizens live below the line. Over the entire United States 15.4% of the population live in poverty, but comparatively, a staggering 17.5% of North Carolina residents live below.
